Salman and Stardom II

At a Barber's shop today while getting a diligent trim, Barber says he would like to go to a film for the new year. I ask him which one, enquiring further whether he would go for SRK's Don 2. He said he didn't watch too many films but the only star he liked was Salman, "Usko ghamand nahin hai. Baaki sab ghamandi hain!" That is a telling statement. While the middle classes love their stars topped with style and arrogance, the subalterns often stick to those old values. It is not without reason that Salman is all over the city, often placed alongside Katrina Kaif. His films give the single-screens an overwhelmingly large share of profits and are the biggest occasions on the entertainment calendar of North India. I don't care if he is nasty in real life, I find it touching that in him, millions still find a star with the heart of gold. Because after all, it is not about him, it is about them.
