Ra.One

Ra.One is a rather interesting blend of a Technology film and an Indian family drama. Is it bad technology? I am not so sure, because for me awe-inspiing technology as an object of fascination in cinema is rarely of any real worth. The sophistication of ambitious technology remains irrelevant except for those who want to exceed perversely the social contract that all cinema, all performance actually is fundamentally premised on. Is it a bad family drama? Not quite, except that there is absolutely nothing new.

Let' come to the vital question then. Is it bad cinema? Yes, because it is so obviously borrowing from two aesthetic universes and blending them in a rather shoddy manner, and has nothing of its own really. Yet it is rather illuminating that the film takes the route it takes, because it is so easy to make a hollywood style smart technology film. To the extent that Ra.One avoids taking that route, it is an acknowledgement of its cultural grounding. That the same does not encourage a creative awakening may have to do with commercial ambitions unsupported by creative ones.
