Kaanton se Kheench ke..

I always loved Din Dhal Jaye as my most favourite song from Guide, so much so that it overshadowed the rest. Then, one winter evening, as I was walking along a busy street, I hummed the lines to myself: "Kaanton se kheench ke yeh anchal, tod ke bandhan baandhi payal.." It only struck me then how compelling these brilliant lines are. Shailendra has infused into these words a motion that SD Burman the genius has used to propel the entire idea of breaking away, but not without rhythm, not without music in one's heart. 'Kaanton se kheench ke ye anchal' signifies the most beautiful but most decisive rebellion, the musical-lyrical phrase has such rawaani in it, the culturally loaded notion of anchal, the act of snatching it away with a flick of one's wrists and flowing with it. The very thought is blessed with innate poetics. It is beautiful beyond imagination. There are moments when inner music makes space for an outside melody and blends with it in a manner that one's own heart in not prepared for. Shailendra sahab, I cannot stop marvelling at the joy these lines bring to my heart!
